Our “Farm School” Learning Pod, Elementary Level, is a learning pod of several homeschool families of children aged 7-10 whose children attend One Acre Farm for supplemental and extra-curricular education.
(*To be eligible, children must be at least 7 or not yet 10 years old on Sep 1, 2023.)
This is a half day program with the option of 2 days per week on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8am-1pm or a choice of either Wednesday or Thursday from 8am-1pm. The learning day is outdoors and is split into outdoor community building, interactive lessons, farm chores and nature journaling and writing.
The Interactive Lessons will include things like animal husbandry, geography and history of domestication of farm animals, digestion and reproduction, beekeeping, gardening & composting, farm skills, camp fire skills, nature journaling and more. As children learn, they will be able to apply their new skills in a guided hands-on manner and ultimately grow to independent execution of the skills.
The Farm Chores part of the schedule includes time for children to rotate through different farm work roles like care of animals, grooming animals, cleaning pens, walking and exercising goats and horses, goat milking (if we have a goat in milk), and more. The work done during this time gives the children connection with the natural cycle of the earth, seasons and life. It fosters responsibility, completing tasks, compassion toward animals, hard work skills, and so much more.
The Community and Team Building Activities will include things like fort building, mud kitchen, outdoor ‘instruments’, hammering & woodworking, building with various materials, ropes & knots, chains & locks, hatchet & saw skills, nature item hunts, compass & orienteering, and more. This is a time to move and explore as they are naturally driven, a time of self-directed activities, teamwork and collaboration with each other. Children aged 7-10 have spent their early childhood years experiencing solo play, mimicking adult skills and forming foundations for more challenging learning. Children of this age naturally form group games and work together. These activities promote group activity and foster teamwork as well as giving the children natural experiences in science, physics, math, problem solving and critical thinking.
Nature Journaling has a lengthy list and variety of reinforcements like scientific and descriptive language, vocabulary, spelling, sentence structure, self-expression, art, drawing skills, creativity, observation skills, mindfulness, quiet thoughtfulness, connecting to the senses, awareness of surroundings, connecting with the environment, and the list can go on. Each child will have their own journal and materials as well as a community class journal to make entries in.
