One Acre Farm has partnered with Kristin Hayles, owner of Curi-Us. Curi-Us offers a variety of math and technology resources, including online, in person classes and now small group classes at One Acre Farm. Check out all the information and offerings below.
Everyone needs to know math and technology. It's no longer an option to say "I'm not a math person." Every young student today will be touched by it in their life and career so if they know it well, they will succeed. The resources we offer are designed to help students learn deeply -- to problem-solve -- to understand concepts they won't forget. We are not here to merely pass a test. We are here to flourish. |

Now enrolling ages 7-14 in Math Circles!
Come have fun with activities that inspire creativity and problem solving as we experience math in a way that that engages all the senses. We will play games, solve logic puzzles, fold paper, create patterns, tie knots, learn about graph theory and topology, and much more! Kids will finally learn what math is and why we use it. |

ages 7-10 Tuesdays 9:00-10:00 am Fall Quarter meets Oct 20, 27, Nov 3, 10, 17, Dec 1, 8, 15 Payment options: One payment of $150 for full quarter (this is the best option because it secures your spot for all classes and gives you a discount) Individual class payment of $25 (this option will only be made available if class size does not max out) Note: We will try to hold all classes in the outdoor classroom but if we have to go inside and there is still a threat of contracting Covid-19, we will all wear our masks to protect each other. About Curi-Us
https://www.curi-us.com/ Understanding math, science, and technology is no longer an option. To thrive in the future, students must gain a comfort level with these subjects to prepare them for a data-intensive world where everything is computerized. But many students have been traumatized by bad math experiences and timed tests. Curriculum often neglects the human side of math -- it denies kids the opportunity to see why we do math, what it is, and why we should care. We simply move through the standards, learning because we have to get somewhere, loseing so many hours of our lives preparing for something we don't understand. No More Math AnxietyWe are here to put a new face on the math and technology most people know. We do more here than just memorize equations and math facts. In fact, memorization is a really bad idea since it doesn't build strong pathways in the brain leading to long-term retention. Learning by doing fun activities, moving around, talking, investigating, sharing, and doing things out of curiosity will help students retain more while having fun. This approach attracts both "math-type" people AND non- "math-type" people, giving everyone access to this mysterious world. We provide opportunities to flourish in mathematics rather than flounder. Curi-Us is a small company dedicated to providing true understranding of math and technology to students everywhere regardless of income. We see that current math programs focused on methods and memorization don't provide students with the skills that will be necessary in the future workplace. We emphasize creativity, problem solving, discussion, play, and figuring stuff out. We offer a safe environment to explore and make mistakes and rich run, thought-provoking activities that touch many senses, allowing for deep brain connections and an understanding that sticks. |
About Kristin Hayles
Kristin Hayles has a B.S. in Geophysics from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and an M.S. in Geophysics from Boston College. She completed two internships with Texaco in New Orleans before joining them as a Processing Geophysicist in December of 1997. Since then she has worked for Wolfram Research, makers of Mathematica software, as an Engineering Product Manager, then again as a Processing and Interpretation Geophysicist for Shell, Hess and Enervest, before switching to a Geophysical software development company called Lumina Geophysical. During this time Kristin took three leaves of absence and homeschooled two of her three children while simultaneously working as well as some time while not working. She spent two years teaching Arduino classes and math circles where she discovered the joy of showing kids that math can be fun. Currently, Kristin works from home helping her older kids find their own path in life through unschooling, while keeping up with her younger child who chooses to go to school. Kristin is the founder and owner of Curi-Us and creates/curates most of the online/offline content and teaches all of the classes. During her career she has seen the need for more creative problem-solvers in the sciences, and is passionate about changing the way people think about math and technology! |
